Plymouth to Lisbon - Navigation Masterclass
August 28th to 7th Sept
Overview
Join us in Plymouth aboard our luxury 57’ Oyster yacht for the 750-mile passage from Plymouth to Cascais. We will cross the Bay of Biscay and cruise down the coasts of Spain and Portugal stopping off to enjoy the sights and sounds of the local harbours and anchorages. This trip is suitable for all, but perhaps especially for those either wanting to log sea miles towards a Yachtmaster qualification or enhance their seamanship skills and knowledge. With a Yachtmaster Instructor of both Theory and Practical on board to guide you and a yacht equipped with the latest navigation, communication and safety systems required for a cruise round the world then this is an opportunity rarely afforded. Join us on the journey and learn the amazing capabilities that technology has to offer but while it has its place let us show you, if you wish, the more traditional methods of using a sextant a Walker log and paper charts to navigate your way.

Monday 28th August Join us aboard Asante at 4pm
Tuesday 29th August We await a weather window to cross the Bay of Biscay. This is time to get to know the yacht and understand its workings.
Wednesday 30th August Depart Plymouth and begin the passage. The first 100NM takes us across the English Channel before approaching the Bay of Biscay. For some this may be their first experience of leaving sight of land for several days. But with all the creature comforts that Asante has to offer then this is certainly no hardship and for some a truly cathartic experience.
Thursday 31st August We cross the western edge of the Bay of Biscay. Marvel at the dolphin who speed beside us, crossing our bow or racing along in their numbers with effortless ease. Keep watch also for whale. The Bay of Biscay lays host to a vast number and on occasion we catch a glimpse of these majestic animals.
Friday 1st September We finish crossing the Bay and follow the coast of Spain passing between islands and the mainland. Our passage finishes in the beautiful town of Baiona.
Saturday 2nd September A well deserved rest day. This quiet medieval historical centre has much to see in a day. Absorb the history – it was here that one of Columbus’ ships returned to announce the news of the discovery of America. A replica lies nearby. Baiona is also on the Camino de Santiago trail and with an historic fort to wander around there is certainly plenty to pass the day.
Sunday 3rd September We continue down the coast leaving Spain behind and make our way to Porto in Portugal.
Monday 4th September Another day to explore. This historic city has much to offer. Climb the Torre dos Clerigos Church Tower and be afforded spectacular views, visit the park in the nearby square or simply savour the many local cafes and restaurants.
Tuesday 5th September Another day heading south. Land will always be in sight as we follow the cost down to Figueira da Foz. With the marina nestled right in the heart of the town and a quiet little beach nearby this is an excellent little stop-over before our last day at sea.
Wednesday 6th September With a 100NM passage ahead we will set off early and continue down the coast to our final destination of Cascais. This well known resort town near Lisbon will offer visitors the opportunity to visit grand mansions, fascinating museums and attractive parks.
