Sailing Adventure
Lisbon to Madeira to Gran Canaria - Navigation Masterclass
16th September to 26th September
Overview
Join us in Cascais, Lisbon, aboard our luxury 57’ Oyster yacht for the 812-mile journey. Our first passage of 480NM which will take around 5 days has us leaving mainland Europe behind and heading west to the Island of Madeira. Once there we will explore the area that time allows before turning south on a 2/day 285NM leg to our destination of Gran Canaria. This trip is suitable for all, but perhaps especially for those either wanting to log sea miles towards a Yachtmaster qualification or enhance their seamanship skills and knowledge. With a Yachtmaster Instructor of both Theory and Practical on board to guide you and a yacht equipped with the latest navigation, communication and safety systems required for a cruise round the world then this is an opportunity rarely afforded. Join us on the journey and learn the amazing capabilities that technology has to offer but while it has its place let us show you, if you wish, the more traditional methods of using a sextant a Walker log and paper charts to navigate your way.

Sun 17th Sept to Thu 21st Sept Heading west to Madeira for 480NM we will see both dolphin and porpoise who either speed beside us or cross our bow racing along in their numbers with effortless ease. For anyone wanting to take sun sights this is an ideal opportunity as the days are still long. With a rotating watch system you will experience the quiet of a night and the beauty of a sunrise and the smell of the homemade bread that comes out of the oven in the mornings. You will be involved in everything that makes a long passage a great experience. You may even be sad to see land!
Friday 22nd September Our first port of call in Madeira is at Marina Porto Santo. You may want to wander in to the main town of Vila Baleira with its cobbled square, cafes and 15th century church or you may simply want to relax on a beach. The choice is yours.
Saturday 23rd September We leave this northern isle and sail south to the main island that is Madeira. We will drop anchor at the foot of Cabo Girao – Europes 7th highest sea cliff rising to an impressive 589M. Snorkel in the crisp clear waters around us or take the dingy ashore to sample the local restaurant.
Sun 24th and Mon 25th September Our last long passage. The weather is getting warmer and the two day sail will go past in a flash. Just over half way we will pass to port the uninhabited Selvagem Islands. This small archipelago surrounded by reefs is a designated nature and marine reserve being both an important nesting point for several species of bird and home to five of the eight species of sea turtle in the world.
