LEG 8 - AUSTRALIA to INDONESIA - Airlie Beach - Great Barrier Reef - Darwin - Lombok
14th August to 18th September
Overview
Join us in Airlie Beach Australia as we set off to explore The Great Barrier Reef – perhaps the worlds most natural gift. It is home to an unparalleled abundance of marine life and hundreds of picturesque tropical islands. On leaving Airlie Beach we take in the Whitsundays, a true jewel of 74 islands which are a treasure trove of bottle green forests. Nestled among them is Hamilton Island with its coast fringed by coral reefs and tours on offer for up-close sightings of koalas, kangaroos, wallabies and kookaburras. Trails lead up to Passage Peak in the east, with views of the surrounding islands. Then as we head north the islands to our east will protect us from the Pacific swell making the cruise a pleasant one. We will be dropping anchor in secluded coves, walk along pristine beaches and snorkel over vibrant coral reefs. Watch lemon sharks and giant grouper swim about the yacht and look below at the giant clams. We may spend a day or two in Cairns to see the Daintree rainforest thought to be 60 million years older than the Amazon rainforest or further up the coast stop off at Lizard Island – a sacred sight for the Dingaal aboriginal people. Having covered over 1400NM we will arrive in Darwin where we will spend several days exploring the area and meeting up with other World Arc travellers. This thriving capital is known for its outdoor tropical lifestyle. With waterfront dining, crocodile adventures and rich in history there is something for everyone. Finally the World Arc yachts gather and set off for the final 920NM leg (5-7 days) to Lombok. Where we say farewell.
